| First Police Reserve lapel badge. Chrome and enamel lapel badge with half moon fitting by Thos. Fattorini, B'ham for the First Police Reserve. This police organisation comprised retired police officers who had volunteered to serve again during an emergency. As manpower demands grew during the war the FPR amounted to just over 2000 men by 1945.

It is believed that this was one of a batch of test types based on earlier WW1 designs that were rejected in favour of more modern designs and put into storage. These examples are amongst an unissued batch with the lowest number 2 and the highest 76.

| Anderson Shelter Spanner. Another of these difficult to find shelter accessories. Rat-tailed spanner supplied with the Anderson shelter in kit form. One end of the spanner was used as a jemmy to align the holes in the shelter before insertion of the bolts. This particular example manufactured as 'snail brand' and in excellent condition.

| AW Bomb enamel sign. 20 x 30cm approx. enamel sign explaining precautions to be used when handling A W Bombs. A W Bombs were more commonly known as the No.76 Grenade or Self Igniting Phosphorous Hand or Northover Projector Grenade and were in widespread use with the Home Guard. Stored in crates, the enamel sign was screwed to the inside of the lid as a warning to users. A W was a reference to the manufacturers Allbright and Wilson.

| Butterfly Bomb warning sign. 30 x 45cms approx. enamelled sign giving a warning to the danger of Butterfly bombs that may lie in the vicinity. These signs were a feature of areas that had been subject to a butterfly bomb attack as despite the knowledge of the numbers dropped in a raid (ascertained by counting the containers), they were notoriously difficult to account for because of their size and ability to snag in trees or undergrowth.
Sign in excellent condition with some minor 'nibbles' to the edges. There were two main types of sign differing in wording the other warning of bombs in hedges and ditches. Uncommon. |
| Cadbury's Blended chocolate. A rare survivor ! A complete bar of Cadbury's ' Blended ' chocolate. In it's utility, printed greaseproof paper wrapper which was introduced as a wartime economy measure, printed with a controlled price. Blended chocolate was introduced as a wartime expediency as full cream milk supplies were limited and were blended with seperated milk to produced 'blended chocolate'. In good condition although I cannot vouch for the quality of the chocolate !! - bar is intact with some whitening. |

| Cambridgeshire Home Guard shoulder flashes. Pair of two piece construction, shoulder flashes worn by the Cambridgeshire and Isle of Ely battalions of the Home Guard. The 25mm x 10mm flashes were worn by the regular battalions of the Cambs regiment and were adopted by the Cambs HG from 1940 and were worn in place of battalion titles. In excellent condition. |

| Coventry Home Guard Anti-Aircraft grouping. An interesting grouping of items to Pte. Wilfred Holt of 106 Warwickshire Home Guard AA Rocket Battery based at Coventry, part of 26th AA Regt, Home Guard.
The grouping consists of an FS cap with a Royal Warwickshire cap badge, no date or size, but approx. 6 3/4, an 'arm' of insignia for WAR 106, AA Home Guard, and a Home Guard service certificate in it's original envelope with a Coventry address to Pte.W.Holt.
All items in good used, unmothed condition, the certificate in clean condition whilst the envelope is slightly tatty. A good original Home Guard grouping. |
| Daily Sketch War Relief Fund badge and paperwork. Daily Sketch War Relief Fund was an extension of an already exsisting fund run by the paper ' The Daily Sketch '. Brought into being in September 1939 the Fund collected money, knitted garments, radios and musical instruments for distribution, mainly to the Services. Workers for the fund were entitled to the white metal, chrome and enamel badge, in this case a pinback version by Fattorini, Birmingham. The badge is in good clean, undamaged condition and is accompanied by two cards from the Fund thanking a Mrs H.Anslow for her gift of wool seaboot stockings. |

| Early Fire Guard armband. Heavy duty cotton armband with the word 'FIRE' stiched on in individual letters closed with a stainless roller buckle. This armband comes from the period in 1940 when volunteers came forward for fire prevention duties, those not under direct warden or fire brigade control often sourced their own armbands via commercial sources, this is one example. They were rendered obsolete by the provision of the Fire Guard armband.

| Gasmask Spectacles. Special spectacles designed to be used when wearing a respirator. Wire framed pescription spectacles with flat side stems and coiled wire earpieces which allow for adjustment and a gasproof seal to be established. Contained in their proper case which has a printed instruction label regarding their use with gasmasks and a name label. Both items in excellent condition. |
| General Civilian Respirator for use by asthmatics. This version of the General Civilian Respirator is identical to the standard version, but was fitted with a flapper type exhale valve. The lack of any type of exhale valve was one of the major problems with the General Civilian Respirator, and as such this modification was made in small numbers to some later versions of the mask to aid those with trouble exhaling hard enough to push air out through the sides of the mask, including asthmatics. This version was made in much smaller numbers, and is more difficult to find today. In excellent condition with some minor corrosion to the adjustment buckles and one partial tear to one strap. Manufactured by Avon in 1940 and packed in the standard cardboard gasmask box which is in good condition with a name having been erased from the lid. |
| German 1kg B1E Incendiary bomb. The standard German 1kg incendiary bomb dropped on the UK in profusion and the baine of the Civil Defence services. Filled with thermite and made from electron magnesium and intiated by an impact fuze, the I.B. burnt with a fierce heat and intense white light.
This particular example is in very pleasing condition with much of the original silvered finish to the body with clearly defined inspection stamps and codes. The fin retains approx 95% of it's
original green finish and will dis-assemble. |
| German air-dropped leaflet. English language, German air-dropped leaflet. Double sided A4 leaflet featuring photographs of the aftermath of the raid on Dieppe. These leaflets were dropped across the South coast in the autumn of 1942 in an attempt to demonstrate the folly of 'invasion', this example has 'Eastbourne' pencilled across the top. In good condition with some minor edge tears. |
| German SD2B ' Butterfly Bomb '. An example of the infamous ' Butterfly Bomb ' that was dropped over the UK in profusion from 1941. Packed into containers which opened at height, the SD2s were armed as the hinged, spring loaded wings opened and rotated relative to the bomb body. The bomb either exploded on impact, after a delay or when disturbed.
This example is the SD2B model with the threaded fuze pocket containing a 41 fuze - airburst or impact. The fuze is substantially intact with some minor nibbling to the body ( not visible with fuze in bomb casing.) The body of the bomb is in original ordnance tan approx 45% with the wings being predominantly a red oxide finish where the original has been lost. Two springs to the outer casing/wings are no longer operative although the other two are working. Outer casing dated 1941. Minor corrosion on some surfaces but altogether an excellent ,sound example of a scarce piece of German ordnance.

This was a helmet intially used outside of London as it features an over-painted diamond, a marking used outside of the London Region until replaced by the London rank markings of stripes. The helmet is thickly painted making it difficult to ascertain any manufacturer markings or dates but is in generally good, but dusty condition. Some paint loss to rim but otherwise good example. |

| Helmet Respirator. This respirator was designed for use by those who had certain medical conditions which prevented the use of regular gas masks. This device was dubbed the Helmet Respirator, and was also sometimes called the Invalid Respirator. It was a large and alien looking contraption that fitted over the wearer's entire head and shoulders. It had two circular eye pieces and a large bellows that could be operated by the wearer. The unit was secured by two cords which could be tied under the arms and around the chest.
This example in excellent condition and is clearly manufacturer marked and dated 1941, the two rubber toggles have not hardened with age, which is uncommon. |

| Home Guard Helmet. Khaki painted Mk.II No.2C mild steel helmet issued to the Home Guard. The mild steel helmet was an attempt to redress the shortage of helmets available to civilian organisations post Dunkirk and was signified, as in this case, by the drilling of three holes to the rim.

| Lincolnshire Home Guard 'Imp' Battalion sign. Printed Lincoln 'Imp' introduced from mid-1941 for wear by all of the Lincolnshire Home Guard battalions. With a design based on a mediaeval sculpture commemorating the legend of the construction of Lincoln cathedral this badge was worn in place of the more usual battalion numbers and letters. This example is a wartime example, distinct from the post-war version in it's slightly different design and is in good condition with a small 3mm hole at about 8 o'clock. |

The National Milk scheme was introduced in December 1941 after milk fell under the rationing scheme the previous month. The tin is marked 'Specially packed for the Ministry of Food' and 'Save for Salvage' and is, typically of wartime tins, without a label and with all information printed directly onto the tin. In clean condition with some minor 'spider' corrosion typical of the corrosion created by the composition of wartime tinplate. |

An excellent example of a 1939 dated Mk II steel helmet for use by the NFS. 1939 dated shell by Rubery Owen & Co.Ltd (Darlaston) with a 1939 dated MkI liner by Helmets Ltd, size 7.25. In excellent condition with two different names, one in pencil and one scratched into the paint, under the rim. NFS decal has slight rubbing but is in otherwise sound and excellent condition and there is no evidence of any Fire Force decal have being applied. All in all an excellent example. |

Modelled on the Army\'s field service cap, this pattern of cap was particularly favoured by female ranks in both the AFS and NFS. This example is in good worn condition with face powder marks to the interior. 1943 dated by Compton Sons & Webb and featuring a name tag to the interior to 860623 Shorthouse. Slightly dusty but unmothed, a good example of an issued cap. |
| NFS/AFS MkII Steel Helmet. A good 1939 dated Mk II steel helmet for use by the NFS of 12 Fire Force ( centred on Cambridge ). Manufacturer marked ( Fisher & Ludlow,Birmingham) and dated. Originally this helmet was used by the AFS whose white initials have been painted and can be clearly discerned to the rear. Paint work approx. 85% intact, over varnished NFS decal 95% with some scuffing and scratches. Good 1940 dated liner and chinstrap. |
| No.6 Group Control MkII helmet. Scarce MkII No.2B helmet marked for wear by No.6 Group Control. No.6 Group represented the outer ring of London County Councils from Hendon and Wembley in the North to Staines and Twickenham in the South. The areas of Middlesex and Surrey covered by Group 6 necesitated sub-divsions A through D, administered by a central control. This helmet was probably worn by a member of the control staff.
Standard, un-manufacture marked MkII No.2B indicated by two holes to the rim. It was originally painted grey, the two indicators to a mild steel, non-ballistic helmet. Standard, 1940 dated MkII liner, size 6 3/4,with a named chinstrap ' B.Silvera'.Subsequently overpainted black and with an applied transfer '6 Group' device. Paintwork rates at about 90% intact whilst the transfer is largely intact with a vertical cut top and bottom. Altogether a scarce and good condition example. |

| Queen's Messenger lapel badge. Silver and enamel pinback lapel badge for a Ministry of Food Queen's Messenger. Queen's Messengers were mainly drawn from WVS volunteers, who travelled in convoys of twelve vehicles to severely blitzed areas to help feed the population where services and shops had been destroyed. There were fifty volunteers per convoy and the badges given for service were withdrawn once service with the convoy ceased.

This box would have contained the early British time pencils and has instructions as to the various delays of the pencils to the outside. In generally bright and clean condition, there is one corner of the border missing (not effecting central design), a 50mm rip to one side (repairable) and a 4mm x 10mm hole to one side. All of these faults sound worse than the actuality and this remains a good clean example. |

Wartime collection including two incendiary bomb fins, various parts of driving bands and fuzes from AA shells, IB parts and what I think are pieces of barrage balloon fabric. The parts are in generally clean condition with some corrosion and the balloon fabric is crumbling but all in all an attractive example of the fruits of a popular wartime pastime. |

The book itself is clean with some minor foxing. |

| Woman Home Guard Auxiliary Certificate. Approx 16 x 20cms certificate given in appreciation of service as a Home Guard Auxiliary. These certificates are not common when you appreciate that there were only 32,000 Women auxiliaries compared with nearly 2 million men in the Home Guard.
This two-colour certificate was issued to a Miss Violet Ethel Larter and is in good condition with some minor foxing. |

| Women's Junior Air Corps Officer's cap badge. Brass,gilt and enamel pinback badge for wear by officers up to and including the rank of Commandant in the WJAC. This badge was introduced sometime in 1944.
The WJAC was initially formed in November 1939 to promote aviation, provide training, discipline and social activities for girls over 14. Modelled on the Air Defence Cadet Corps it was intially called the Women's Air Defence Cadet Corps but changed to WJAC in April 1940.

This was previously known as the Housewives Service(SEE item 7189) and was renamed in 1942 demanding a new design of card. In mint condition with an inscription to the Kingston on Thames WVS Centre to the reverse. |

This badge was announced in 1938 issued for WVS volunteers who had undertaken ARP training, it was quickly superceded the following year by a new design. Designed as a lapel badge it is commonly seen as a hat badge.

Introduced in 1940 and added to through the war these brooches were intially made in chrome and enamel, this example is an 'economy' version using red paint. Centre Staff refers to WVS members employed in local WVS headquarters known as centres.

| WW2 British Pattern Time Pencil. WW2 British pattern time pencil as issued to Auxiliary Units. This alloy, copper and brass example has most of it's original finish complete with blue bands indicating 20 - 30 hours delay. These early British pattern delays are very scarce compared with later patterns and this example is complete but INERT. |

Brass,enamel and silver gilt button hole badge for the National Pigeon Service who provided trained homing pigeons for essential use by the RAF, Army, Home Guard, SOE and Special Forces to relay urgent messages back to England. Their enrolled keepers were issued with a numbered badge, in this case No.1612. This example by Maples & Beasley, B'ham is in good condition with minor surface scratches to the enamel, toned overall. | 'New Ways of War' - Tom Wintringham. An influential title by the left wing, International Brigades veteran Tom Wintringham. Drawing on lessons from the Spanish Civil War this 128 page 'Penguin Special' deals with everything from home-made grenades, road blocks, anti tank ditches and everything required to fight a 'People's War'.
Written in 1940 these methods were taught at the Home Guard school at Osterley Park which Wintringham helped to establish.
